F. A. Q.
-
How old can I start playing?
Most pianists can start from about 5 ½ years old. For woodwind and brass instruments it will depend upon the age and size of the student but usually around 7 years old.
-
Where will the lessons occur?
They are all conducted online via Zoom, at the moment. Eventually, they will also be taught at my studio in Thirsk. Most pupils are opting to do a combination of both.
-
Will I have to do homework?
Yes , you will be expected to practice daily and complete any written theory homework although younger pianists will start at a more gentler pace.
-
How long should I practice for?
You will be expected to practice for the same amount of time length as your lesson. eg. a 30 minute lesson will require 30 minutes of daily practice. Theory will be approximately 30 minutes per week extra.
-
How do I pay for the lessons?
All lessons are payable in advance monthly by standing order.
-
What happens if I miss a lesson?
If it is due to illness and at least 48 hours notice has been given and a re-scheduled lesson cannot be agreed upon, I will transfer your pre-paid lesson fee to the following month. No refunds are given if you double book yourself and do not attend your lesson.
-
Do I have to enter myself for exams?
No. I will send you a form to complete, enter you with the selected exam board and send you the results.
-
Can I do a theory exam online?
All theory exams at grades 1 to 5 are online only. You will need a laptop or computer with a webcam, a quiet space and lots of practice!
-
How are the practical exams examined?
At the moment, due to COVID, performance exams can be recorded and uploaded to the music boards website. Piano exams can be recorded at your home, if your piano is in tune, and all instrumentalists that need an accompaniment are recorded at Thirsk. Eventually, they will return to face-to-face examinations with an examiner.
-
Can I enter competitions?
Yes. I encourage performance of any kind whether it is at for a grandparent, a school concert, an exam or at a competition.
